Welcome to Kungur Merchant!
Just two hours on the Siberian Route and you find yourself in the ancient merchant city of Kungur, where time seems to have stood still. A quiet provincial town with small streets, merchant mansions, and churches, it was once the capital of Perm Land, a "merchant republic," a major craft center, and the tea capital of the Russian Empire.
Kungur is not accidentally called "twice-born." It was first founded in 1648, but 28 km away from its current location. Only after the Bashkir uprising, in 1663, Kungur was moved to the area between the Sylva and Iren rivers. Conveniently located at the crossroads of trade routes, Kungur became a major merchant center, and from 1737 — the capital of Perm Land.
Kungur can rightly be called an open-air museum. Ancient merchant estates, stone churches, Gostiny Dvor (Merchant’s yard), and market squares vividly illustrate life in provincial towns during the 19th century. It's no wonder that many historical films have been shot here. A particularly beautiful view of the city opens from the height of the Tikhvin Bell Tower and the observation deck located next to the mansion of merchant Dubinin.
Kungur is also famous for its stone churches. The Dormition Church, Transfiguration Church, St. Nicholas Church, and Tikhvin Church are excellent examples of the Ural Baroque style and the Moscow style, which is unusual for this region. Most of the churches were built with merchant donations.
