Join us to celebrate Easter on Belaya Gora
The Belogorsky St. Nicholas Orthodox Missionary Men’s Monastery is located on top of a picturesque mountain, 85 km from the city of Kungur and 100 km from the city of Perm.
From afar, the monastery guides travelers with the glow of its golden domes. The beauty and grandeur of Belaya Gora have been compared to the landscapes of Holy Mount Athos. The way of life of the Belaya Gora monks was originally very strict, modeled on the Athos rule. For this reason, the monastery earned the honorable title of “the Ural Athos”.

Founded at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Belogorsky Monastery soon became one of the largest monasteries in Russia. The monastery’s economy was truly enormous – arable land, meadows, ponds, mills, apiaries, and more than 14 craft workshops. It also had its own photo lab and printing house. A children’s shelter, a parish school, and an almshouse for the elderly were opened there.
The main cathedral, the Exaltation of the Cross, still impresses with its size, power and beauty. From Belaya Gora, an amazing view opens up over the Ural forests and hills. Many people note the special atmosphere that prevails on the mountaintop. It is no coincidence that a hundred years ago, up to 70,000 pilgrims flocked here every year, despite the lack of good roads.

The history of Belogorsky Monastery contains much that is unusual and mysterious. How was it possible to create such a powerful monastic complex with a large economy and a main cathedral that surpassed even the capital’s churches in size and technical equipment in just 20 years, on an empty site? What made 70,000 pilgrims cover huge distances every year, coming on foot along terrible roads to a monastery in the remote forests of the Urals? How did the history of the monastery intertwine with the history of the royal family? What miracles happened on the mountaintop?

You will hear answers to some of these questions during the tour of Belogorsky Monastery. The rest of the answers will be suggested by Belaya Gora itself.
